Dr Francis Nichols Memorial Plaque Unveiled

On October 21, CEO Bob Garrett, joined Mark Sparta, Dr. Lisa Tank, Terri Freguletti, Dr. Massimo Napolitano, Dr. Howard Ross, and many current and retired Hackensack University Medical Center OR nurses and team members to honor Francis Nichols, M.D.

Dr. Nichols, the former chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery, spent more than 40 years at Hackensack and was beloved by all. The plaque, which was unveiled for Dr. Nichols family, now hangs in the surgical waiting room and reads:

Dr. Nichols’ spirit will live on in our OR, a place that was very special to him.

A gifted and talented thoracic surgeon with some of the highest volumes, Dr. Nichols’ intellect and skill were outmatched only by his compassion for his colleagues, his team and most especially his patients and their families.

Dr. Nichols also treasured teaching young surgeons and was the recipient of the “Surgical Teacher of the Year Award” on numerous occasions. He never raised his voice, he always took the time and he was truly loved by all.

Dr. Nichols was very proud of his many years of dedicated service on the Hospital Board of Governors and participating in Hackensack Hospital's evolution from a community hospital to a University Medical Center.

This plaque is a reminder of his strength, determination and talent. Dr. Nichols may be gone, but we are proud to continue his legacy.
