Joseph E. Parrillo, M.D., chair of the Heart and Vascular Hospital and the Justice Marie L. Garibaldi Endowed Chair at Hackensack University Medical Center, has co-authored the fifth edition of  “Critical Care Medicine: Principles of Diagnosis and Management in the Adult.”

The textbook, acknowledged as one of the standard major textbooks in the field of critical care, delivers expert, practical guidance on virtually any clinical scenario encountered in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU.)

The first edition was published in 1995 and co-edited by Dr. Parrillo and Roger Bone, M.D. The goal was to produce the acknowledged “best practice” standard in critical care medicine.  After the untimely death of Dr. Bone in 1997, Phil Dellinger, M.D. joined Dr. Parrillo as the co-editor for the second, third, fourth and now the fifth edition. The textbook, which is divided into nine parts and 79 chapters, includes 16 contributing physicians from Hackensack Meridian Health.

Online videos are also available featuring a variety of content areas, including echocardiograms and bedside ultrasounds from a variety of exam sites.  The last edition was published in 2014.

“The completion of each edition is very rewarding,” says Dr. Parrillo.   “The knowledge and experience contained in each edition is vast and comprehensive and I am very proud of the effect these textbooks have had in saving lives around the world and helping physicians deliver the best possible care for their patients.”
