Dr. Abdulla Al-Khan, vice chairman and director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine & Surgery and The Center for Abnormal Placentation at Hackensack University Medical Center, was honored as the Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the New Jersey Department of Commerce. 

Dr. Al-Khan was recognized by Senator Bob Menendez at the award ceremony who introduced Dr. Al-Khan along with Ro Sorce, chair of the HMH Board of Directors. 

Dr. Al-Khan was also presented with an American flag that was flown over the capital in recognition of his award.

About Dr. Al-Khan

Dr. Al-Khan has lectured extensively in all areas of perinatal medicine, including general obstetrics and gynecology, both nationally and internationally. He is recognized as an expert in high-risk pregnancy, caring for patients with the most complex medical and surgical conditions. In 2022, Dr. Al-Khan spoke to the Black Maternal Health Caucus of the U.S. Congress, discussing how advancing technology in electronic medical records could improve obstetrical outcomes. 

In September 2015, Dr. Al-Khan’s research department was the recipient of a $3.3 million National Institute of Health (NIH) grant, as well as other grants totaling more than $4.8 million. He was the first physician in the world to perform a robotic transabdominal cerclage on a pregnant patient. He received national and international recognition for delivering the oldest pregnant patient in the United States. Dr. Al-Khan has also been featured on multiple media channels including CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, Good Morning America, NBC, The Today Show and many others discussing a variety of topics. 

In 2008, Dr. Al-Khan established The Center for Abnormal Placentation (CAP) at Hackensack University Medical Center. The multidisciplinary center is the first in the United States and the world to coordinate the care of patients who present with placenta accreta spectrum disorders, a major cause of obstetric hemorrhage and maternal mortality. Translational research complements the expert medical care the program delivers.
