A new video highlighting the benefits of single-port robotic technology features two prominent Hackensack University Medical Center physicians, Michael Stifelman, M.D.,  director of robotic surgery at HUMC, and Mutahar Ahmed, M.D., director of HUMC’s Center for Bladder Cancer. Hackensack University Medical Center was the first program in New Jersey — and one of the first 10 programs in the world — to adopt the single-port robotic method, which allows surgeons to use several tools at once through a single, small entry point. The result is less scarring, shorter recovery times and better outcomes than traditional surgery. Dr. Stifelman is a pioneer in this technique. “It enhances our ability to minimize trauma to the patient,” he says in the video. “It has made us better surgeons and is allowing us to train the next generation of surgeons more effectively.” Dr. Ahmed is also an early adopter of the single-port approach. “When you see a patient after two years who is able to urinate normally, and this patient says, ‘Doc, thank you for giving me my life back,’ that’s the key,” says Dr. Ahmed. “That’s the energy you get to do the next tough case.”
