Islam Salah Elkherpitawy, M.D., known around HMH as "Dr. E," or "Dr. Islam," has joined Ocean University Medical Center as director of the Hospitalist Program, overseeing 20 on-site hospitalists. “The culture at OUMC is amazing; everyone is so friendly and willing to help in every way,” he said. "My goal is to create a work-life balance while improving the quality of care with evidence-based medicine.” Dr. E emigrated from Egypt to pursue a residency at Jersey Shore Medical Center. During this time he was awarded the titles of Chief Resident of the Internal Residency Program, Resident Teacher of the Year and Resident of the Year. Board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, he began his career as hospitalist at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in 2021, where he was awarded the COVID Crisis Leadership Award for extraordinary leadership skills to improve and advance sustainable health. He has also published several research articles and is a member/leader of several committees for Hackensack Meridian Health. He's married, has two children and enjoys swimming, soccer and music. He has also been awarded the Golden Medal in the 2003 Egypt Math and Science Olympics, a prestigious award that recognizes gifted high school students in math and science.
