Smoking Cessation Treatment Center Launches

What you need to know

Hackensack Meridian Health launched a regional Community Smoking Cessation Treatment Center initiative in February 2019 at 10 locations in northern New Jersey, including the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center and Palisades Medical Center.

The Details: Program targets underserved, uninsured smokers

Partially funded by grants from the State of New Jersey Department of Health, the Treatment Center will operate in partnership with community-based organizations to provide pharmacotherapy and culturally and linguistically competent counseling sessions to 400 underserved, uninsured smokers per year. Ana-Paula Cupertino, Ph.D., director, Latino Cancer Disparities Center, associate director, Cancer Prevention and Control, John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, helped launch the project. Chinwe Ogedegbe, M.D., section chief, Research, Emergency and Trauma Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, will serve as co-director and oversee pharmacotherapy. She will be tasked with implementing an electronic referral system within various Hackensack Meridian Health clinical departments, including surgery, orthopedics, cardiovascular and the emergency department.
