Phase I Program Expansion Brings Novel Clinical Trials to JSUMC Patients

What You Need To Know

  • Jersey Shore University Medical Center is now offering Phase I clinical trials at HOPE Tower in Neptune for patients with solid tumors who have exhausted available treatment options, including immunotherapy and other standard-of-care therapies.
  • Jersey Shore University Medical Center serves as a satellite site for the current Phase I clinical trial program at Hackensack University Medical Center’s John Theurer Cancer Center — the largest, most extensive Phase I clinical trial program in New Jersey, with 35 Phase I clinical trials currently available and 130+ patients enrolled each year.
  • Extending John Theurer Cancer Center’s Phase I program to Jersey Shore University Medical Center will reduce the need for patients from Central NJ to travel to Hackensack to participate in early-stage testing of novel, first-in-human treatments. Phase I clinical trials offered at Jersey Shore University Medical Center will focus on immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and cell therapies.

How to Refer a Patient

Patients who are referred to the Phase I program will be prescreened for the entire Phase I clinical trial portfolio, including trials offered at Hackensack University Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Physicians and care teams can refer a patient by email by following these two steps: Step 1: Draft an email to Phase I staff with patient details, including:
  • Patient name
  • Patient diagnosis
  • 1-2 sentences about current status and/or past treatment
Step: 2: Send the email to Phase I staff at phase1referrals@hmhn.org After receiving the referral email, the Phase I team will contact the patient directly to schedule a consultation. After the patient’s consultation, a member of the Phase I team will follow up to let the referring physician know whether the patient is eligible for participation in a Phase I trial. If the patient is not eligible for participation or must stop a clinical trial, the patient will be referred back to the referring physician for ongoing management.
