Worlds First ZAPXSynaptive Technology Integration at Jersey Shore University Medical Center

What You Need To Know

  • The Dr. Robert H. and Mary Ellen Harris ZAP-X Center for Noninvasive Neurosurgery at the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute and Department of Radiation Oncology at Jersey Shore University Medical Center is the world’s first team to integrate ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® with Synaptive’s Brain-Only Silent MRI.
  • Bringing these technologies together provides the most precise, accurate and rapid treatment possible for many pituitary and brain tumors including brain metastases, meningiomas, and acoustic neuromas, as well as other intracranial disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia and arteriovenous malformations.

The ZAP-X/Synaptive technology integration makes a new noninvasive alternative to surgery available to patients throughout the Northeast U.S. ZAP-X provides a painless outpatient procedure without an invasive head frame, anesthesia or incision, and, often, without a recovery period.

The first new dedicated radiosurgery platform in nearly 15 years, the ZAP-X system sets new precision and comfort standards in noninvasive patient care. Designed exclusively for cranial radiosurgery without the quality trade-offs of multipurpose, full-body radiotherapy systems, ZAP-X’s precision beam lowers radiation exposure to the healthy brain, as well as the eyes and optic nerve, maximizes cognitive function preservation, and expands the potential to pursue complex cases and future stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatments if needed.

Integrating Synaptive's Brain-Only Silent MRI technology, an option only available at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, offers real-time, point-of-care imaging feedback to physicians to ensure therapeutic success. The Center draws on a robust team of neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, and physicists to perform these procedures.

“Our specially trained staff with the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute look forward to collaborating with neurologists, radiation oncologists and other physicians across New Jersey and the broader region to provide the exclusive combination of enhanced accuracy and patient comfort. The ZAP-X/Synaptive technology integration offers revolutionary technology addressing brain tumors and other serious neurological conditions,” said Dr. Shabbar F. Danish, Chair, Department of Neurosurgery, Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Professor of Neurosurgery, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

In addition to noninvasive radiation delivery with precision accuracy, ZAP-X/Synaptive technology integration allows clinical teams to shorten the time lapse between diagnosis and treatment. “The precision gains that come from integrating MRI and SRS, coupled with the patient comfort benefits of short-to-zero recovery time, results in an advanced care experience and outcome potential that we’re excited to bring to the region,” said Dr. Timothy Chen, Medical Director, CNS Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Medical Director, Proton Therapy Department of Radiation Oncology, Hackensack Meridian Health

The Dr. Robert H. and Mary Ellen Harris ZAP-X Center for Noninvasive Neurosurgery at the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute was made possible through a very generous donation from the Golden Dome Foundation, a non-profit organization that was founded by the late Dr. Robert H. Harris and his wife Mary Ellen Harris, the foundation’s current president.
